MPM 35B Final Project Documentation

RISING ST@R is a simple game of coin collection. It is based on the idea of merging music with entertainment, playing with a form of advertisement.

The game is built with processing. The player will sit down in front of the laptop with a mouse as a controller and a headphone for privacy. The moment you start playing the game, you are exposed to the music of an upcoming CD. All songs are Indies, at first, freely shared on the internet. These singers are considered RISING ST@RS because they have gained enough popularity to release a CD. As a player of the game, you will be able to preview the upcoming CD. The goal of the game is to save up enough gold coins and avoid silver coins to buy the CD. The coins fall from the top of the screen and the speed changes according to the tempo of the background music that is currently playing.

The five senses of a human is an interesting thing. RISING ST@R tests the human ear. The more one listens to a sequence of what they may think it’s noise, the more one can make out the details. So at first, if the player is too preoccupied with collecting coins (mainly due to abrupt change in speed), meaning they are passively listening, it will eventually grow into active listening. This change happens when a particular song sticks out or attracts the player by melody/tune, tempo, lyrics or instrumentation. As the game component becomes a passive activity while the music becomes active, the player can judge whether or not the CD is worth buying.
